Finance-led executive role | Change agent | Community impact
This is a rare opportunity for a qualified, contemporary finance leader to step into a senior executive rolewithin a large, complex and deeply respected community organisation.
The role will suit an experienced CFO, COO, General Manager, or similar executive, with a forward-looking mindset, who brings energy, curiosity and modern thinking to their work, and is motivated by building, modernising and strengthening an organisation with long-term impact — not simply maintaining the status quo.
About the role
Reporting to the President and working closely with the Board and senior leadership, the Chief Financial & Operating Officer is responsible for the organisation’s financial stewardship, operational leadership and organisational effectiveness.
This is a finance-led role with genuine breadth, combining strong commercial discipline with oversight of people, systems, facilities, marketing and engagement.
Key responsibilities include:
- End-to-end financial management, reporting, budgeting and compliance
- Governance, risk management and statutory obligations
- Human resources, WHS and people leadership
- Facilities, security and asset management
- Oversight of IT systems and digital infrastructure
- Oversight of marketing, communications and engagement, including digital channels and social media (strategic oversight rather than hands-on content creation)
- Leadership of professional staff and a significant volunteer cohort
This is a hands-on, high-trust executive role requiring sound judgement, adaptability and the confidence to lead change in a highly visible environment.
Community context and leadership expectations
This role requires demonstrated experience working within a Jewish organisation or a deep, practical understanding of the Sydney Jewish community, including its rhythms, values, events and expectations of an active, contemporary leadership presence.
The role will suit someone who is still actively building their leadership journey and is energised by visibility, engagement and change.
Success in this position is underpinned by a genuine desire to contribute meaningfully, build trust over time and be personally invested in the organisation’s future.
Important context for candidates
To ensure alignment, we wish to be transparent:
- Recognised accounting qualifications are essential (CA/CPA or equivalent required)
- Remuneration is modest – relative to corporate executive roles – reflecting the community-based setting
- The role is based in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney; candidates should live locally or be comfortable with the location
- There is an expectation of visible leadership and out-of-hours engagement, including attendance at key events and community activities
For the right candidate, the reward is not scale or short-term financial upside, but the opportunity to apply senior capability where it genuinely matters.
About you
You will bring:
- CA/CPA (or equivalent) accounting qualifications
- Strong hands-on experience across P&L, balance sheet, cashflow, audit and compliance
- Proven experience working with Boards, Treasurers and committees
- Confidence leading multidisciplinary teams across finance, operations, HR, facilities, IT and marketing
- A calm, modern leadership style with the ability to drive change respectfully
- Comfort operating in a high-visibility, relationship-driven environment
Experience in not-for-profit or volunteer-supported organisations is highly regarded.
